About IELTS

QThere are several IELTS test centres in Japan. What are the main differences?
A

IELTS is the world’s most popular English language test for higher education and global migration. IELTS is jointly owned by British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English. JSAF IELTS Official Test Centre (JP112/JP114) is administering IELTS in Japan in partnership with IDP: IELTS Australia. 

QThere are two different modules in IELTS, Academic and General Training. Which module is best for me?
A

The test you choose should be based on what it is you want to do. Choose the Academic module if you wish to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels. The General Training module is for those who wish to migrate to an English speaking country such as Australia, New Zealand and Canada. 

QWhat are the IELTS test rules and regulations?
A

All the test rules and guidelines can be found on the Notice to Test Takers provided with the IELTS Application Form on the “IELTS Essentials” website. You are advised to read the “Information for Candidates” booklet carefully so that you have all the necessary information for the test day.

QDo you offer IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills at JSAF?
A

Unfortunately we don’t offer IELTS for UKVI or IELTS Life Skills at the JSAF IELTS Official Test Centre at the moment.

QHow is IELTS for UKVI different?
A

IELTS and IELTS for UKVI are the same in terms of format, content, scoring and level of difficulty. If you are looking to work or study in the UK, you may need to apply for a UK Visa and demonstrate that you have met the required level of English by taking a Home Office approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as IELTS for UKVI or IELTS Life Skills.

QCan I take both IELTS on paper and IELTS on computer at JSAF?
A

Yes, JSAF IELTS Official Test Centre (JP112/JP114) provides both IELTS on paper and IELTS on computer.

QWhich test should I take?
A

This comes down to personal preference and choice. Some people might feel comfortable taking the tests on paper, whereas others prefer to type and use a computer.

QHow can I book an IELTS test?
A

Book your test online by choosing an available date and test venue from here.

QHow much does an IELTS test cost?
A

It is 27,500 JPY. The fee is same for IELTS on paper and IELTS on computer.

QI am unable to upload the copy of my passport when I book online. What should I do?
A

The file may be too big. Please check that the photo meets our format guidelines below.

  • Dimensions: at least 800 x 700 pixels
  • Size: no larger than 5.0 Mb
  • File format: tiff, jpg, doc, docx, pdf, png, gif, jpeg

QCan I request my Speaking test time?
A

Yes, you can select your preferred Speaking test time when booking the test.

QWhen will I receive information about my Speaking test time?
A

You will receive all the necessary information via email by 2 days before your test day. You can also check your Speaking test time on your Booking Page.

QI have not received any payment confirmation yet. When will I receive it?
A

You will receive a payment confirmation email after you have completed your payment. If you have not received the email within 3 working days, please contact JSAF IELTS Official Test Centre.

QI have not received any information regarding my test yet. What should I do?
A

Final Information is available online approximately 2 weeks before your test date. Please click here for more information. You will also receive test day information via email by 3 days before your test day.

QDoes JSAF offer any IELTS related events such as seminars or online courses?
A

JSAF offers IELTS Advantage (only in Japanese) and IELTS Masterclass. Click here for more information.

QI am unable to login to my account. What should I do?

QWhat if I need to transfer the test date or cancel my booking?
A

Please contact the test centre where you have booked your test. If you apply for the test at JSAF (JP112/JP114) and would like to defer the test date or cancel your booking, you must do so 5 days before your test day. You will receive a refund of 19,330 JPY excluding an administration fee of 6,050 yen. Please note that you are not allowed to ask for a refund when deferring or cancelling the test within 5 days of your test day. Cancel/test date transfer policy may differ at each IELTS Test Centre.

QCan I cancel my booking online?
A

Yes. Please submit the cancellation request form. Please note that this form is only for those who have booked the test with JSAF.

QWhen is the cancellation/test day transfer deadline?
A

You must submit the cancellation/test day transfer form by 12 pm within 5 days of your test day. 

QI have renewed my passport. What should I do?
A

Please upload the copy of your renewed passport on your Booking Page at least 3 days before your test day.

QCan I get a receipt for an IELTS test fee?
A

Payment status can be checked by either of the following methods.

(1) Prepare the necessary documents by yourself by following STEP.1 and STEP.2.

STEP.1: Prepare your payment information by either of the following methods.

For IELTS on computer test takers taking the test after December 5, 2023, use the reservation confirmation email with the subject line “Important details for your IELTS test” that you received after booking the test.

For IELTS on paper test takers and IELTS on computer test takers taking the test before December 5, 2023, login your account and click [Payment Summary] on the right side of the menu bar at the top of your account. You can see your name, test date, payment date, amount, Receipt No., etc.

STEP.2 Download the JSAF registration number (click here to download)

(2) Request JSAF-IELTS to issue a receipt.

We are able to issue a receipt upon request for those who have taken the test at JSAF (JP112/JP114). It will be available for issuance after your test date. If you need a receipt, please provide us with the following information using the inquiry form. It takes about 2 weeks to issue a receipt. Receipts are issued in data format (PDF) only. Receipts cannot be reissued.

Please note that JSAF-IELTS can only issue receipts for those who have taken the test at either Test Center JP112 or JP114. If you have taken the test at other test center, please contact the test center you took the test.

On the test day

QWhere should I contact if something comes up on the test day (weekends)?
A

JSAF IELTS test centre is closed on weekends. In case you need to contact our test centre urgently, please contact us from here or send us an email. 

QWhat if I need to change my module on the test day?
A

You are not able to change your module on the test day. Please make sure that you have registered for the correct module before the test day.

QI went to a different testing venue. Can I still take the test?
A

No, please read through your confirmation notice carefully before your test day and get to the correct testing venue on time.

QWhat if I cannot arrive at the testing venue on time due to public transport delays?
A

Please submit an official certificate proving the delays within 5 days of the test day.

QCan I take a bathroom break during the test?
A

If you want to go to the bathroom during the test, please inform an invigilator. However, you cannot go to the bathroom during the last 10 minutes of the Writing and Reading test and during the Listening test.

Q Do I need to provide the copy of my passport on the test day?
A

No. Please bring your valid original passport on the test day.

QI do not have my original passport with me right now. Can I still take the test without my passport?
A

No, you are unable to sit the test without your original passport. However, if you have submitted your passport to an embassy for your visa applications, please contact JSAF IELTS Official Test Centre immediately.

QCan I use headphones during the Listening test?
A

When you book IELTS on paper at the Tokyo-Takadanobaba venue, you will be provided with headphones during the Listening test. For IELTS on computer, you will take the Listening test with headphones.  

QShould I write in pencil?
A

You must use a soft pencil provided for answering questions.

QI would like to change my speaking test time. Can I do that?
A

No. You are unable to change your speaking test time without any adequate reasons. 

QIs there any room available to have lunch before the Speaking test?
A

There isn’t any room available for test takers to have lunch. 

QI have an accent. Will that impact my test result?
A

IELTS is an international test, and we accept your accent wherever in the world you’re from. When you sit your Speaking test, remember that your pronunciation is important – however, you will not lose marks for speaking with an accent. A variety of accents will also be used during the Listening test.

QWhat if I am absent or sick on the test day?
A

 If you are absent on the test day without any prior notice, you will not be able to ask for a refund. However, if you are unable to sit the test due to a serious medical condition, you will receive a refund, excluding the administrative fee of 6,050JPY. Please provide the test centre with a medical certificate within 5 days after the test date.

QWhat do I need for the Speaking test?
A

You need your valid passport for the Speaking test.

QCan I take notes on the question booklets?
A

Yes, you are allowed to make notes on the question papers. However, the examiner will not look at those booklets.

Q Can I answer in capital letters?
A

Yes, you are able to use both capital letters and lower case letters when answering the questions.

QWhat English accents are used during the Listening and Speaking tests?
A

IELTS is an international English Language Testing System. Therefore, various English accents are used during the tests.

QWhat can I bring into the test room?
A

You can bring your passport into the test room. Other ID documents such as Driving Licence and National Identity Card are NOT valid for the IELTS test. You are allowed to bring water in a transparent bottle if necessary. You must leave the rest of your personal belongings in the designated belongings area. Mobile phones and other electronic devices are strictly prohibited in the test room. JSAF will provide you with both a pencil and an eraser.

QWhat is the Speaking test like?
A

The duration of the Speaking component is between 11-14 minutes comprising of 3 parts. This is the only test which is conducted a face to face with a highly qualified examiner. The Speaking test is recorded on a digital recorder.

QDo I need to sit all components of the test on the same day?
A

The Listening, Reading and Writing tests are held on the same day without any breaks in between. Depending on the test centre, you may have the Speaking test on the same day as the three other tests, or it may be scheduled up to 7 days either before or after the test date. The Speaking test is usually conducted on the same day as the three other tests at JSAF. Those who register for the JSAF-IELTS test more than 10 days before your test day are able to submit their requests for their own Speaking test time. About the test results

QWhere do I find my "Centre Number"?
A

 

You will find your test centre number on the upper left corner of your Test Report Form. JSAF-IELTS is a test centre for those who hatve taken IELTS at JP112 or JP114.

QWhen will I receive my test results?
A

For IELTS on Paper test, your Test Report Form will be sent out to you by post 13 days after IELTS on Paper test. You will receive only one original copy. When you need more than one copy in order to apply for Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), United Kingdom Visas and Immigration (UKVI), or universities and other educational institutions, JSAF IELTS Official Test Centre will send your Test Report Form directly to the organisations.

For IELTS on Computer, your result will be released 1-5 days after IELTS on Computer test. You can check your result from your account , however, you will not receive your original copy unless you request it. If you need your original copy, please send the request from here .

QHow many Test Report Forms will I receive?
A

You will receive one copy of the Test Report Form. If you need more than one copy in order to apply for visas or educational institutions, please submit a request for additional Test Report Forms. Please note that we will send up to 5 copies directly to any educational institutions or other organisations for free. However, charges will be applied when you request more than 5 copies or tracked courier services sent out to an overseas address.

QHow are the IELTS tests marked?
A

IELTS applies a 9-band scoring system to measure and report test scores in a consistent manner. You will receive individual band scores for Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking and an Overall score on the band scale from one to nine. Find out more about IELTS scoring system here.

QHow can I check my IELTS results online?
A

You can check and preview your results online by entering your full name, date of birth and your passport number from here.

QHow long are IELTS test results valid?
A

While it is up to each organisation to set a validity period that works for their purposes, the IELTS partners recommend a 2-year validity period for IELTS test results.

QI have taken the IELTS test at another test centre and I have lost my Test Report Form. Can I get another copy?
A

If you have taken the IELTS test at a centre other than JSAF (JP112/JP114), we are not able to issue your Test Report Form. Please directly contact the test centre where you have sat the test.

QI would like to request a remark. What should I do?
A

Please submit the EOR request form within 6 weeks after your test day. The Enquiry on Results will be processed within 2 to 4 weeks. You will receive a letter via email confirming your final scores from JSAF IELTS Official Test Centre. Please contact JSAF IELTS for more information.

QHow long does it take to issue my additional Test Report Forms?
A

We will issue your additional Test Report Forms within 5 working days after receiving the request form. Please make sure that you check your deadline before applying and that you have enough time for that. For more information, please click here.  

QHow soon will I be able to re-sit the test?
A

There are no strict rules regarding how often you take the test. However, IELTS advises you to undertake additional study and careful preparation before taking the test again.

QWhat if I am not happy with my results?
A

You can request a remark at JSAF IELTS Official Test Centre within 6 weeks after the test day. You must pay an enquiry fee of 15,000JPY. The fee will be fully refunded if your final score changes. It is important to note that IELTS Examiners and markers follow strict assessment guidelines and are regularly monitored. The IELTS marking procedures are done with the highest quality control.
